I was actually typing this when I got the twitter acknowledgement that Dave Delaney had just been hired by Griffin to be their Social Media Coordinator. So, before I go any further, congrats to Dave and all of the work he does into keeping Nashville going as one of the premiere digital hubs in the south east. Kudos on your new job – you deserve it!
That being said, he’s not the only one with a bit of news. I started studionashvegas right after Holly and I got pregnant (we didn’t know we were pregnant until a month later, but the business was up and going when we found out). That means that almost 11 months ago I set out to create great web sites and make a name for myself in Nashville’s super-saturated design market.
Starting Sept 1st, I begin an even greater chapter.
At PodCampNashville, I had the privilege to run into Allen Fuller of Flat Creek Consulting. We met again at the Geek Breakfast, and I was asked to help him on a WordPress site for a client of his. Ever since, I’ve been devoting about 25-30% (or more) of my time per month to Flat Creek’s projects.
Now, it’s just a bit more official.
Starting Sept 1st I will be coming on half-time as a full-on employee of Flat Creek Consulting. I’ll be moving downtown to their office, where I will be splitting my time between the remaining studionashvegas clients I have and the current Flat Creek clients. Pretty soon, I will move over entirely to Flat Creek.
studionashvegas is not going away. I will be turning studionashvegas into my private brand, which will be my arm for a design blog, my personal blog, and Dr WordPress. I have lots of plans, and this will allow me the time to work on them.
So, why give up a cushy job at home to work for an office? First off, Allen and his team are very "New Media" savvy. I work with them on WordPress blogs, twitter campaigns, and lots of other projects that are very forward thinking. We see eye to eye on a number of different ideologies, and when I head into their office to work, it’s a friendly, productive atmosphere.
Second, this gets me out of the house and into an environment where I can synergize with other people and have a place to focus on my work. Being at home is great and all, but there are always so many distractions that want to monopolize my time, it’s crazy!
Finally, this allows me to do something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time – turn off every so often. I want to have a "work time" and a "play time". Right now, I work all day. I enjoy my work, but I have a newborn, and I want to spend time with my wife and child when I’m at home.
So I join the ranks of the great Nashvillians who have gone before me to achieve greatness from a freelancing/home studio setting to an office setting. I’m super stoaked about it, and I know that in the long run it will lead to greater things in the future for both Flat Creek and studionashvegas.
