Living in a Land Without High Speed Internet

I went home this weekend.

Sure, doesn’t sound like much of a fun story, but when you realize that where I’m from, most of the people don’t have high speed Internet, you realize that the statement is a little bigger than you first thought.

It was homecoming weekend for Murray State.  I go every year, as does my wife, because we’re alumni and it’s a good excuse to travel home to see my parents.

Don’t get me wrong – the scenery is breathtaking:

My parents live on about 40 acres of farmland (complete with garages, buildings, and even beehives).  But they still have dial up Internet.  I almost took a sound byte of the modem just to prove it, but I figured these pictures would suffice.

Less than 20 miles down the road at the university is a completely different world:

While it’s not a big city, Murray State has been working closely with the Univ. of Louisville on a very interesting project: Social Media as a class in college.

So, it’s amazing that within this county-wide area (granted, its two counties, but still only 20 miles apart) is such completely different microstructures of culture and technology.

Oh and yes, my parents want high-speed Internet – they just can’t physically get it because of the lack of hardware.
