If I use the comments_number function or the get_comments_link function, it returns the correct number; however, the number looks like this: "Comments (27)," with the word "Comments" and the parenthesis around the number. I just want the number.

It does give the correct number. In other words, the count is the same in WordPress and IntenseDebate.

However, to get JUST the text, I have to use this:

That works but the number is different from the IntenseDebate count.

When you use comments_number do you get just the text for the number of comments or do you get Comments (#), where # is the actual number of comments? If the former, then I wonder where this other text is coming from. I am stumped!

Mitch, This is GREAT stuff. Thanks. I have implemented it on my blog. I even linked the comment bubble on the single post page, so that if you click on it, it takes you to the comments section of the post.

Now if I can just get the comments to sync up with IntenseDebate. Right now, the comment counts are slightly different.

Thanks again.
