Foursquare vs. Gowalla… annnnnd fight!

gowalla-va-foursquare[1] So I’ve been doing my research trying to figure out which of the two location-based metagaming services are going to come out on top.  There are two that have risen to the top of the pack: Foursquare, my first choice, or Gowalla, the Austin based startup.  Both platforms bring their own set of features to the table, and each has their pros and cons, but here’s what I’ve learned so far:

Foursquare

  • it’s competitive – you score points and get on a leaderboard
  • the prizes are harder to obtain – they don’t tell you up front exactly how to win badges, so unless you visit wikipedia you have to earn them blindly
  • strictly business – not a lot of bells and whistles
  • precise – you have to have an exact address to add a new location
  • Mayorship – only one mayor per place.

Gowalla

  • more dressed up – I like the interface of Gowalla better than Foursquare
  • easier to obtain badges – you get stamps, stickers, items, etc for doing just about anything
  • I like the item aspect – it’s cool to see who has had items, dropped them, and then claimed them and dropped them again before you came along – a sisterhood of the travelling pants sort of thing (I mean come on, how awesome is it to pick up Tacos at Swanky’s Taco Shop [purely by coincidence])
  • WP-Walla (the WordPress plugin) functions nice – the WordPress foursquare plugin does not.
  • Foundership – you can leave an item for free for someone to become a founder and claim that place as your own.  But then again, so can other people.

So far, I think Gowalla is winning the location-based gaming war, but I’m going to give it a fair shot (1 week) to see.  What do you guys think?  Do you have any special reasons for choosing one over the other?

I think it would be cool to have an item API to show vaulted or carried items in case pol want to trade. Otherwise it's awesome.

Hi i'm the author of WP-Walla and i am just dropping a comment to say that i am very glad that you uses and liked my plugin.I'm working on a new version right now, anything you miss or any suggestions?

I am a big fan of the competitive side of Foursquare. It makes me want to check-in to places. You are right though, GoWalla is much cleaner - something that I am sure is going to be coming to Foursquare.

I'm not saying I like foursquare, but their iPhone app NEEDS that update. Badly. Once it comes in, depending on how they open up the doors for people to create their own content, that will decide for a lot of people which one to use. But until then, I hope they can put their latest round of VC to good use :)

The GPS pinning, plus the interface, gives Gowalla a +2 to FourSquare. And considering so many people game the system in foursquare, it's easier and more fun to collect the items and trade them than it is to compete for a leaderboard, I think.

So far, I see no reason to disagree with your assessments. And the interface war will probably decide it for me. So far, Gowalla wins that one. Also, I don't know the address of many places I visit. And if I pin a place a few meters off in Gowalla, there is the chance to correct it on their Web site.

I like Gowalla because it is easy to check-in (GPS), has the items you can pick up, drop, and swap, and Gowallatools.com is the perfect companion site.

Disclaimer: I am also an Elite Street Team member on Gowalla, so I have moderator permissions to merge duplicate spots and stuff.

You can also Vault items that you collect, so you have that aspect of Gowalla as well - trying to collect all the items that are out there.

Don't forget you can also vault items that you pick up, so it also brings that collecting aspect to the game. Its a game to try an collect all the items as well as earn the badges for checking in and the special badges for special events (like WordCamp Atlanta).

Only tried Foursquare but I love it. They have been working hard the past couple months, cranking out updates and really trying to push to be the leader. They are supposed be having a total facelift on the iPhone app soon. Give it time and I think they will lead over GoWalla.
