It’s worth noting that there are quite a few WordCamps going on in the month of June.  There’s 3 in the US, and for those of you across the pond (waaaay across), there’s one in Thessaloniki (now that’s a camp I’d love to be “invited” to speak at!)

I’m sitting at the Starbucks at Five Points in Birmingham, AL today – it was a super-boring, three hour drive here, but once I got out and stretched my legs here I remembered just how much I love his part of the ‘ham.  I’m gearing up for a client meeting in half an hour, but the real reason i’m in town is to jump into WordCampBirmingham.  For those of you not in the know, WCBHM10 starts tomorrow at 9 am and goes until Sunday when everyone gets sick of hanging out.  However, if you’re going to be in town tonight, I will be chilling, maxing, and relaxing all cool at The J. Clyde (located at 1312 Cobb Lane) beginning at 6 p.m. for the pre-camp meet-up.

I have lots of friends here, and it’ll be good to reconnect with everyone and see how they’re doing, but if you’ve never met me, then I especially want to hook up and meet you.  So, if you can, come join us, and I’ll hopefully see you on Saturday!

I’m sitting in my hotel room after getting a hot shower after the day’s conference.  I sat outside talking to Brian Collinger for a while (he’s one of Automattic’s Code Wranglers – and the dude knows his stuff).  And that’s what these events are all about – connecting (and reconnecting) with awesome people and getting lots of useful knowledge. 

It’s funny what you have to learn for these things.  Chris Spencer, the event organizer, asked me to present on WordPress 3.0 today as a last minute session.  I agreed, and (although I knew a lot about it) never really got a chance to put it all together.  So, I started a dev site and started diving in.  I learned more just playing around with the development site than I have in a while.

And so, I take one thing, among many, from this conference – don’t be afraid to love what you do, and do it just for fun every now and then.  Because that’s where the moment’s of true learning are.

WordCampBirmingham is little under an hour and a half underway down here at the Innovation Depot in Birmingham.  Dougal gave an amazing presentation on plugin development earlier and Sara Cannon is giving a great presentation on branding WordPress as we speak.  There’s a lot of people here (around 200ish) and so far the lineup of presentations is looking to be killer.

I’ll update this as the day goes on – Matt M. himself is going to give the lunch keynote so that promises to be good as always.
